This book presents the outcome of the research designer Kai Linke undertook while visiting traditional a dozen of craftspeople in Kyoto, Japan. Further, it is a form of visual travel diary that draws on his stimulating insights he has gained from the country, its people, structures and many other aspects.
When considering function and form in Japanese design, one becomes aware of a balance maintained between man, material and nature and one senses the gratitude and respect that the craftsperson has towards material. Linke studied the interplay between the past and future of the country as well as the intersection of ancient values and modern techniques, using the traditional craftsmen in Kyoto as basis for this research.
Including exciting contributions to this book by architect Klara Bindl and the art historian Merle Radtke.
